Here’s an idea: you know how the US Revolution started with “No taxation without representation?” Why don’t we try enforcing the inverse, too? I mean, if someone doesn’t pay what they’re worth in taxes, they shouldn’t be able to lobby or vote either, right?
…Right???

Think of the second order effects of that. Once you have enough power, you can lobby for higher and higher taxes, that normal people are unable to pay, and the more you do that, the fewer normal people are represented, and only the super rich, some of whom would still have hundreds of billions even if they paid 90% in tax, would have representative power. Hence such a law can be used to completely marginalize the poor, and even middle class people, while giving more power to rich people. If your intent is that the sick and poor who live bellow the minimum taxable incomes, or don’t pay tax due to various exceptions, should not be allowed to vote, then I guess such a law would more than do the job, but if your intent is to make the rich who don’t pay taxes, pay taxes, then such a system would not really make a dent in their powere, and might be a very useful tool to their ends. Besides, most rich people /do/ pay their tax obligations, it’s usually the massive corporations they own stakes in that figure out ways to work around the tax system, and those corporations don’t vote anyway; they lobby and donate, which are their main political power tools; they are more than capable of paying their worth in tax, and designing a system where the common man cannot.
